How to Use Turkey Call

If you’ve decided to use a turkey call device for your hunting, have patience as a beginner. It takes a lot of practice to get the vocal right.

  • First, for a mouth call, put the latex reed in your mouth, so the open end is facing outside and put your tongue lightly against it. Make sure the seal is tight.
  • Turkeys give out “yelps” when they want to assure other turkeys around and reassemble them. To get a yelp, exhale an “H” but don’t let the air escape from the area except from the between of call and your tongue. Some hunters use words to make it, more accurate.
  • You can control the sound of yelping by differencing the pressure on the reed. To get a high tone, exaggerate the tone for about two seconds. To get a lower tone, open your mouth slightly and let the pressure on reed reduce. After mastering both, combine them and make a yelp.
  • Turkeys “cluck” to get the attention of other turkeys to communicate with them. Make 2-4 high tone notes and then 2-3 yelps; you can use words like “kee-kee”. Put more pressure on the reed. This call can be useful while bringing in a flock of turkey.
  • Turkeys “purr” while coursing for food in a field, to travel and feed themselves. Purrs are actually a difficult sound to make. You may want to practice more to make it more effective. To make a purr sound, place your tongue slightly against the reed and then breath out and flutter your lips rapidly.
  • Purrs can lure out gobblers, since it is used by hens that are looking to mate. Make a 5-15 seconds long cut sounds with loud and aggressive tone to replicate a lonely hen’s sound.
  • One thing is to consider, if you have allergy to latex, don’t use the mouth call. Switch to box call, tube call or other turkey call devices. It can cause you harm if you use mouth call despite your allergy to it.

Conclusion: Turkey calls can be one of your strong points in hunting after you’ve mastered its techniques. You can make yourself the best turkey call even at home with few inexpensive ingredients easily. So all you have to do is to patiently practice it. Good luck in next hunt.
